Hair Salon for Foreigners in Yokohama: What to Expect and How to Book

Finding a hair salon in Yokohama that genuinely works for foreign clients — English consultation, experience with non-Japanese hair types, honest communication — is harder than it should be. Here’s what to look for, what to expect, and how my Yokohama appointments work specifically.

Why Yokohama Is Different

Yokohama has a long history as an international city — the foreign settlement in Yamate, the Chinatown, the port. It has proportionally more foreign residents than most Japanese cities, and a higher concentration of Asian expatriates, particularly from China and other parts of East and Southeast Asia.

Despite this international character, finding a stylist in Yokohama who genuinely understands foreign hair types — as opposed to simply being willing to try — remains difficult. Most salons, even in international areas like Motomachi and Minatomirai, train primarily on Japanese hair. The language accessibility has improved; the technical experience gap hasn’t necessarily closed.

My Yokohama Practice

I operate a one-on-one salon in Yokohama every Monday and on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month. Appointments are by booking only — I see one client per day, which means the entire session is focused entirely on your hair.

My Yokohama practice grew specifically from working with the area’s expatriate community — particularly quality-conscious Chinese residents and other Asian expatriates who wanted the same level of technical precision they’d experienced at high-end salons in Shanghai, Singapore, or Hong Kong. Over time, the client base expanded to include expats from across Asia, Europe, and beyond.

Services Available in Yokohama

  • 縮毛矯正 (Hair Straightening) — acid-based, low damage. My primary specialty.
  • Haircut — precision cutting with full consultation
  • Digital perm — for clients who want natural curl enhancement rather than straightening
  • Hair treatment — repair and conditioning treatments

How to Book

Consultation before booking is strongly encouraged. Send me a photo of your hair — dry, unstyled, in natural light — and describe what you’re hoping to achieve. For straightening specifically, your chemical history (color, bleach, previous treatments) is essential information. I’ll respond honestly about what’s possible and what the process involves before you commit to an appointment.

Consultations are in English, Chinese (using translation tools where needed), or Japanese. WeChat, WhatsApp, and Instagram DM are all fine for initial contact.

What Makes Yokohama Appointments Different

  • One-on-one only — no other clients in the salon during your appointment
  • Appointment-only scheduling — your slot is reserved exclusively for you
  • Extended consultation time — particularly for first-time clients, the consultation is unhurried
  • English available throughout — not just at booking, but during the appointment itself
