Japanese Hair Straightening in Tokyo for an Indian Guest Living in Australia

Before & After

A guest from India who lives in Australia visited me in Tokyo for Japanese hair straightening. She had her hair straightened once before, in spring last year, and since then her natural texture had grown back in at the roots. She was very happy with the result, and I would like to share how we approached her hair.

Her hair history

About a year and a half had passed since her last straightening. The new growth near the roots had a strong natural wave, while the lengths and ends were still hair that had been straightened before.

So her hair had two different conditions on one head. The regrowth needed proper straightening. The previously straightened ends needed care rather than the same strong treatment again.

Choosing the strength for her hair

Her natural texture at the roots was strong, so I chose a relatively strong straightening setting for her new growth. Choosing the strength for the hair in front of me, rather than using one formula for everyone, is how I approach every regrowth retouch.

On the previously straightened ends, I applied a treatment to care for the hair and keep it soft, instead of straightening those lengths again in the same way.

Giving the first solution enough time

After applying the first solution to the regrowth, I gave it a good amount of processing time and checked carefully that the hair had softened enough before rinsing. For strong natural texture, this step matters: if the hair is rinsed too early, the result does not hold as well.

Ironing the hair thoroughly

Next, I passed the flat iron through her hair carefully, section by section, so the straight shape was properly formed from the roots down. Then the second solution set the hair in its new straight shape.

Because the first solution was given enough time and the ironing was done thoroughly, I expect her result to last well. How long straightening lasts always depends on each person’s hair, how fast it grows and how it is cared for at home.

The result

The wave at the roots settled, and her hair is now straight and smooth from the roots to the ends, with a natural shine. The ends feel soft rather than stiff. She was delighted with the result.

Questions guests often ask

My straightening is growing out. Do you straighten all of my hair again?

Not necessarily. I check where the new growth starts and treat the regrowth and the previously straightened lengths differently, depending on your hair history and condition.

My hair has a very strong natural texture. Can it still become straight?

Often yes, with the right strength and enough processing time. I decide this after seeing your hair and hearing your treatment history, so please send me a photo first.

How long will the result last?

It depends on your hair and how quickly it grows. The straightened hair stays straight; what changes over time is the new growth at the roots.
