English Speaking Hair Salon in Yokohama: Finding One That Actually Works for Your Hair

Yokohama has a large and growing international community — yet finding an English-speaking hair salon that genuinely understands non-Japanese hair types remains surprisingly difficult. “English OK” doesn’t mean “I know how to work with your hair.” Here’s how to tell the difference.

The Yokohama Expat Hair Problem

Yokohama’s international character — the historic foreign settlement in Yamate, Chinatown, the port district — gives it more foreign residents than most Japanese cities. But even here, most hair salons are technically trained for Japanese hair. The willingness to serve foreign clients has increased; the technical experience gap with non-Japanese hair types hasn’t necessarily closed.

The result: many foreign residents in Yokohama commute to Tokyo for hair appointments, or settle for results that don’t reflect what they actually wanted. Neither is necessary.

What “English Speaking” Actually Means at Japanese Salons

There’s a spectrum:

• Basic English for booking — can confirm appointments, take basic requests. Can’t discuss your hair history, explain what they’re planning, or navigate any complexity.
• Functional English — can communicate about your hair, understand reference photos, explain the process. Still may not have experience with non-Japanese hair types.
• Full English consultation — can discuss your hair’s specific needs, your history, the risks, the realistic outcomes, and give you honest advice about what’s possible. This is what you actually need.

Before booking, send a photo and a description of what you want. The quality of the response tells you which level you’re dealing with.

My Yokohama Practice

I operate a one-on-one appointment-only salon in Yokohama every Monday and on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month. Yokohama vs Tokyo: Which Should You Choose?

For most treatments, the technical result is identical — the same stylist, same techniques, same products. The practical difference:

• Yokohama appointments — Mondays and 1st/3rd Thursdays. Better for residents in Yokohama, Kanagawa, or those who prefer avoiding the commute to Ginza.
• Tokyo (Ginza) appointments — Tuesday through Sunday, 2nd/4th Thursdays. More scheduling flexibility for most clients.

How to Book

Send a photo before booking. Your hair dry, unstyled, in natural light — plus a description of what you want and your chemical history. I’ll respond honestly about what’s possible before you commit to an appointment. Consultations are in English, Chinese (with translation assistance), or Japanese.
