English-Speaking Hair Color in Tokyo: A Guide for Foreigners

Getting your hair colored in a country where you don’t speak the language — and where most clients have very different hair from yours — is nerve-wracking. Here’s an honest guide to hair color in Tokyo for foreigners, from an English-speaking stylist in Ginza.

Why hair color is different for foreigners in Japan

Most salons in Tokyo work mainly with Japanese hair, which has its own color behaviour. Western, lighter, previously-bleached or already-colored hair reacts differently — it can grab tone unexpectedly, fade differently, or need a gentler formula. Add a language barrier to that, and a simple color appointment can go wrong fast.

In my salon the whole consultation is in English (or 中文), so we agree exactly on the shade, the tone and how light or warm you want it before any color touches your hair.

Organic color for sensitive scalps

A lot of clients come to me because regular dye irritates their scalp — itching, stinging or redness — especially after years of coloring. For them I use an organic color that is far gentler on the scalp and skin, with much less irritation, while still giving rich, natural tone and shine.

This is also the kinder choice if your hair is already fragile from bleach or previous color. You can see how I combined gentle organic color with repair in this real damage-repair before & after.

What I can do

  • Full color & root touch-ups — natural, rich tones matched to your skin
  • Organic color — gentle on sensitive scalps and fragile hair
  • Color on damaged or previously-bleached hair — handled carefully to avoid more damage
  • Color + straightening or treatment in one visit — planned so the two don’t fight each other

Honest note on going lighter

If you want to go dramatically lighter or do heavy bleach work, I’ll always tell you honestly what’s realistic for your hair’s condition in one visit — protecting the health of your hair matters more to me than rushing a result.

Color + straightening together

Many clients want both color and smooth, frizz-free hair. These can often be combined, but the order and timing matter to keep your hair healthy. If straightening is also on your mind, see English-speaking hair straightening — and we’ll plan the safest way to do both.

Pricing & booking

Color starts from ¥8,800 depending on length and the work involved; treatments and cuts can be added. The simplest way to get an accurate quote is to send me a photo of your current hair and tell me the shade you want — in English or 中文. See the full services & pricing.

Common questions

Can you color blonde or already-light hair?

Yes — lighter and previously-treated hair just needs a careful formula, which is exactly why an English consultation matters so we agree on the result first.

I have a sensitive scalp. Is there a gentler option?

Yes — I use an organic color that is much gentler on the scalp and skin while still giving rich tone and shine.

Can I get color and straightening on the same day?

Often yes, with careful planning so the two processes don’t over-stress your hair. Send a photo and I’ll advise.

Do you speak English?

Yes — the whole appointment, including the consultation, is in English or 中文.

Thinking about a new color?

Send a photo — let’s get the shade right

Tell me the color you want and I’ll give you an honest plan and price — in English or 中文. No fee, no pressure.
