Getting a “Japanese haircut” as a foreigner can be wonderful — or a miscommunication disaster. Here’s what to know so you get the cut you actually want.
What it is
Japanese salons are known for precision, technique and care. But most are used to cutting Japanese hair, which is typically straight and fine — different from many foreigners’ hair.
Who it suits
If you have wavy, curly, thick, fine, blonde or color-treated hair, you’ll want a stylist who understands how your hair behaves, not just Japanese hair.
For international hair
The two things that go wrong most are hair type and language. I work with international hair every day and the whole consultation is in English (or 中文), so we agree on exactly what you want — length, weight, shape — before I start. After 23 years, including time in Singapore, this is what I do.
