Before and After: Curly Hair Straightening in Tokyo — A Real Client Story

This is what I wish more salons would publish: not just a photo, but the full story. Hair type, the problem, what we did, and what the result actually looks like to live with.

The Client

An expat from the UK, living in Tokyo for two years. Naturally curly hair — 3A curl pattern, moderately thick, previously colored with no bleach. Came to me after two disappointing experiences at other Tokyo salons where the result was either too flat or didn’t last.

The Problem

  • Morning styling: 40–50 minutes to look presentable
  • Rainy season: result lasted 20 minutes after leaving the apartment
  • Previous salon result was stiff and plastic-looking, faded in 6 weeks
  • Wanted natural movement — not “super straight” hair

The Process

  • Formula: Acid-based, pH 5.2 — gentler than most salons use on curly hair
  • 1.5cm margin at roots to preserve natural root volume
  • Iron at 160°C rather than 180°C — prioritizing soft result
  • Total time: 4 hours 20 minutes

The Result

  • Morning styling: 40–50 min → 8–10 minutes
  • Humidity: held shape through Tokyo’s rainy season
  • Texture: soft with natural movement — looked like her own hair, manageable
  • Her words: “This is what I asked for at the other two salons.”
