Her concern: volume and frizz — but please, not pin-straight

Her natural hair has a strong wave, and the volume and frizz had become hard to manage. What she asked for was very specific: control the spread and the frizz with straightening — but keep it natural, not stick-straight.

I hear this request a lot, and I agree with it. Straightening should leave hair that moves and falls naturally — not a flat, artificial finish.

The thinning-scissors story

She told me something I hear from international clients again and again: at a previous haircut in Japan, her hair was heavily thinned with thinning scissors (すきバサミ / suki-basami), and afterwards the volume and frizz got worse.

Thinning scissors are used skillfully in many Japanese salons — but on thick or wavy hair, heavy thinning can backfire: the shortened strands spring up and away from the surface, which reads as more frizz and more volume, not less. It is one of the most common reasons international clients come to me after a disappointing salon visit. That experience is exactly why she searched for a stylist experienced with international clients’ hair.

What we did

We combined four things in one session: a cut to rebuild the shape, Japanese hair straightening adjusted for a natural finish, root color, and a treatment. Yes — color and straightening can be done in the same visit when the hair’s condition allows it.

The result

The finished result was smooth and natural — the frizz and spread are gone, but the hair still moves — and she was very happy with it. You can see the change in the photos and videos.
