How to Maintain Straight Hair During Tokyo Summer: The Complete Guide

You got the straightening. The result was exactly what you wanted. Then June arrived, and the rainy season hit. If your straight hair is struggling in Tokyo’s summer humidity, this guide is for you — specifically what works, what doesn’t, and what makes the difference between results that hold and results that don’t.

Why Tokyo Summer Is Different

Tokyo’s summer humidity — regularly 80–90% relative humidity from June through September — exceeds what most clients have experienced in their home countries. Even clients from Singapore or Bangkok often find Tokyo’s summer worse, because the combination of high humidity and urban heat creates atmospheric conditions that affect hair more severely than either alone.

Straightened hair is not immune to humidity. The chemical treatment changes the hair’s internal structure — but the cuticle still exists and still interacts with atmospheric moisture. The difference: straightened hair that’s properly cared for resists humidity significantly better than untreated hair. The difference between “properly cared for” and “not” is larger than most clients realize. See why Tokyo humidity affects hair →

The Summer Morning Routine That Works

  • Step 1 — Wash with cool water (max 38°C) — hot water opens the cuticle before you even start styling. In summer, use the coolest comfortable temperature.
  • Step 2 — Apply heat protection oil to damp hair — 1 pump to mid-lengths and ends before blowdrying. Non-silicone only. Silicone products build up and make humidity resistance worse over time.
  • Step 3 — Blowdry completely, concentrator nozzle downward — direct the airflow down along the hair shaft. Never air dry in summer — the cuticle sets unevenly and frizz returns faster.
  • Step 4 — Apply half a pump of oil to ends when 80% dry — this is the step most people skip. At this point the cuticle is still slightly receptive. Oil applied now seals better than oil applied to fully dry hair.
  • Step 5 — Cool shot for 30 seconds — finish with the dryer’s cool setting. This locks the cuticle in the smoothed position. The difference in how long the result lasts outdoors in humidity is significant.

What to Avoid in Summer

  • Air drying — the single biggest mistake. Always blowdry, even in summer heat.
  • Hot showers — switch to warm or cool. The cuticle opens with heat, and what you lose in the shower you spend the morning trying to undo.
  • Silicone-based products — they provide short-term surface smoothing that humidity overwhelms, and build up over weeks making the problem worse
  • Tying hair while damp — wait until hair is completely dry before tying or clipping

When to Get a Touch-Up

If new root growth is making summer management harder, it may be time for a root touch-up. Most clients return every 5–6 months. A touch-up treats only the new root growth — never the already-straightened sections. Summer, right before the rainy season, is a popular time for touch-ups for exactly this reason.
