A Chinese client in their 20s, currently living in the United States, visited me in Ginza because their short, coarse hair was difficult to control. The natural wave created bulk and made the overall shape hard to keep neat.
For this case, I used acid straightening to soften and smooth the wave while intentionally preserving volume at the roots. The goal was not a flat, rigid finish, but a clean short-hair silhouette with natural dimension.

The hair had strength and a visible wave pattern. On a short style, this can make the outline expand and become difficult to manage, especially around the crown, sides, and nape.
Why I preserved volume at the roots
Short hair can look flat if every section is straightened with the same tension. I adjusted the treatment and iron work so the curl could be controlled without pressing the root area tightly against the scalp.
This balance is especially important when the client wants easier daily styling but still wants the haircut to keep its shape. The result should move naturally rather than look overly straight.
After: smoother, controlled and still dimensional
After the two-hour service, the wave and unwanted bulk were reduced, the surface looked smoother, and the short silhouette became easier to control. Importantly, the roots were not flattened, so the finished style kept natural dimension.
