Layer Cut & X Treatment for Thick Indian Hair in Tokyo (Before & After)

One of my clients came in this week with thick, strong, wavy hair that expanded the moment the humidity hit — a really common story for international clients in Tokyo. Here’s exactly what we did, and how her hair looked afterwards.

English — easy consultation

She lives in Tokyo, and like a lot of the clients I see at my salon in Ginza, she’d found it hard to find an English-speaking hairdresser who genuinely understands thick, coarse Indian hair. A lot of Japanese hair salons mainly work with fine, straight Japanese hair, so heavier textures can get a one-size-fits-all approach. That’s exactly the kind of hair I enjoy working with most.

Hair Concerns Before the Appointment

When we talked through her hair during the consultation, the same few problems came up — and if you have thick, wavy hair, you’ll probably recognise them:

Too much volume. Her hair built up so much bulk that it expanded outward, especially in Tokyo’s humidity.
Nothing stayed in place. Styling it in the morning took ages, and it never really held.
No shine. The surface looked dry and dull rather than glossy.
Hard-to-handle ends. The lengths and ends were the most difficult part to control day to day.
Before — thick, voluminous, wavy Indian hair that expands and is hard to manage
After — smoother, shinier, more manageable hair following a layer cut and X Treatment

Why We Chose Layer Cut + X Treatment

With this much density, the answer isn’t to force the hair flat — it’s to remove weight intelligently and put moisture and smoothness back in.

So I started with a layer cut, working from the face-framing pieces through to the overall shape. Layering thick hair the right way takes out the bulk that causes the “triangle” expansion, so the hair falls instead of puffing, and the ends move more naturally. Cut too aggressively and thick hair frizzes more — so this part is all about judgement.

Then, to deal with the dryness and lack of shine, I used my X Treatment, and finished with a Head Spa to relax the scalp and help the treatment settle in.

About X Treatment

X Treatment is a multi-step treatment built around four ingredients that each do a specific job for damaged, coarse or dry hair:

Keratin — hair is mostly keratin protein. Replacing what’s been lost rebuilds strength and smooths the surface, so hair feels less rough.
Collagen — helps the hair hold moisture, adding softness and flexibility rather than that stiff, over-treated feeling.
Lipids — the natural oils coarse hair often lacks. They seal the surface, which is where shine and slip come from.
Chitosan — forms a light protective film over the hair, helping the smoothness and moisture last longer between washes.

Together they target exactly what thick, dry hair is missing: protein, moisture, oil and protection.

Finished result — glossy, controlled ends after a layer cut, X Treatment and head spa in Tokyo

The finished result — smooth, glossy and easier to manage

After the cut and treatment, the difference was clear: much better slip when you run your fingers through it, more shine, and ends that finally stayed under control and moved together. The overall volume was calmed down without losing body, so it looks healthy rather than flat. She left able to picture styling it easily at home — which is really the whole point.

Who Is This Service Recommended For?

This combination works especially well if you have:

Thick, dense hair that feels like “too much” and expands in humidity
Strong wave or curl that’s hard to manage in the morning
Dry, dull hair that has lost its shine
Coarse or textured hair — including Indian, mixed and other international hair types — that Japanese salons often struggle with

If a full straightening treatment feels like too much and you mainly want manageable, shiny, lighter-feeling hair, a layer cut with X Treatment is a great place to start.
