My hair was totally manageable in California. Then I moved to Tokyo and it became something I didn’t recognize.
This is nearly word-for-word what a client from San Francisco told me at her first appointment. She’d been in Tokyo for eight months, working in Shinjuku, and had spent most of the summer avoiding outdoor plans because of what happened to her hair the moment she stepped outside. Here’s her full story — and what we did about it.
The Client
An American from the Bay Area, working in Tokyo for a tech company. Naturally curly hair — a 2C–3A curl pattern, medium thickness, previously highlighted (partial highlights, no full bleach). Had been using American products she’d brought from home. No previous chemical straightening of any kind.
Her hair in San Francisco: manageable with a 25-minute routine, predictable, something she’d figured out over years. Her hair in Tokyo after June: frizzy within minutes of leaving any air-conditioned space, requiring 50+ minutes every morning with unreliable results, and effectively unmanageable during the rainy season.
What Was Actually Happening
Her American hair products — a leave-in conditioner, a curl cream, and a finishing spray she’d relied on for years — were formulated for Northern California’s climate, where summer relative humidity averages 50–60%. Tokyo’s summer humidity runs 80–90%. The products were simply undersized for the environment. The anti-frizz spray that held beautifully in San Francisco had no chance against a Tokyo August.
Her curl pattern, which was 2C at home, was behaving more like 3B in Tokyo’s humidity — the atmospheric moisture was being absorbed unevenly by the hair shaft, causing strands to curl tighter and frizz more dramatically than her natural pattern. This is physics, not a hair problem. Why Tokyo humidity destroys hair →
The Consultation
She came to me specifically not wanting “super straight hair.” She’d seen images of Japanese straightening results online that looked stiff and artificial, and was hesitant. I explained that those results come from older alkaline treatments — modern acid-based straightening (pH 5–6) produces a completely different result: soft, natural movement, not pin-straight or plastic-looking.
Her highlights required careful assessment. The highlighted sections had higher porosity than her natural hair, meaning they would absorb the straightening chemical faster and could over-process if I used full-strength formula throughout. The approach: different formula strength for the highlighted sections versus the natural root area. This requires experience — it’s not the standard approach in most salons.
The Process
- Formula: Acid-based, pH 5.5 for roots — pH 5.8 (gentler) for highlighted mid-lengths and ends
- Application: Sectioned with extra care at the highlighted sections; 1.5cm margin at roots to preserve natural root lift
- Iron temperature: 155°C — lower than standard to protect the highlighted sections
- Total time: 4 hours 30 minutes
The Result: Before and After
BEFORE — Tokyo Summer
Morning routine: 50+ min
American products stopped working · Falls apart within 10 min outside · Rainy season unbearable · Avoided outdoor plans · “I didn’t recognize my own hair”
AFTER — 3 Months Later
Morning routine: 10 min
Holds shape through full Tokyo day · Natural soft movement · Highlights still visible and healthy · “I actually enjoy mornings now”
At her follow-up three months later, she mentioned she’d recommended me to four colleagues at her company. Two of them had since booked appointments.
Aftercare: Switching from American Products
The product switch made a significant difference. Her American shampoo contained silicone that had been gradually building up on her hair, making it more porous and more reactive to Tokyo’s humidity over time. Switching to SBCP Raw Mineral Shampoo (silicone-free) after the treatment extended the result noticeably compared to clients who continue with silicone shampoos.
