Oil straightening and Japanese acid straightening are frequently compared as if they’re completely different things. The reality is more nuanced — they share the same basic principle, but differ in formula strength, finish, and application.
The Core Similarity — And the Key Difference

“Both oil straightening and Japanese acid straightening use a reducing agent and iron work to restructure the hair’s internal bonds. They’re in the same technical category. The difference is in the formula design — oil straightening typically uses a gentler reducing agent combined with oil-based conditioners, aiming for a softer, more natural result. Japanese acid straightening (pH 4–6) is formulated for maximum straightening effect while minimising damage.”
| Treatment | Straightens strong wave? | Principle | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Japanese Acid Straightening | ◎ | Reducing agent + iron + re-bond | Permanent |
| Oil Straightening | ◎ (depends on product) | Same category — reducing agent + iron | Varies by product/technique |
| Acid Treatment (酸熱) | △ (strong wave: no) | Acid + heat (reinforcement) | Temporary |
| Treatment / Botox | ✕ | Surface repair only | Temporary |

When Oil Straightening Makes Sense
- You want a softer, more natural straightening result — not completely straight
- Mild to moderate wave pattern
- You prefer the texture of a gentler formula
- Color-treated hair where an even gentler approach is appropriate
When Japanese Acid Straightening Makes More Sense
- Strong wave, curly, or very frizzy hair that needs full straightening
- You want the most durable result
- Tokyo humidity is a consistent daily problem
- You want the result to hold in all weather conditions
What About “Acid Treatment” and “Hair Quality Improvement”?
These are different again. Acid treatment (酸熱トリートメント) uses glyoxylic acid to reinforce hair internally — it produces shine and reduces frizz, but cannot straighten strong curl or wave. “Hair quality improvement” (髪質改善) is a marketing term in Japan that different salons use for entirely different treatments — it’s not a defined technique.
