The term “oil straightening” is one of the most inconsistently used in the Japanese salon industry — different salons use it to describe very different things. Here’s what it actually means.
The Honest Definition
KENJI — 23 years in Tokyo
“In my experience, ‘oil straightening’ is used by different salons to describe completely different treatments — from intensive conditioning blowouts to mild chemical relaxers. I’ve seen clients get completely different results from ‘oil straightening’ at different salons. Always ask what product will be used and what result is actually realistic.”
In general: oil straightening deposits oil and protein compounds onto the hair surface, sealed with heat. It temporarily smooths the cuticle and reduces frizz. The key word is temporary — because it works on the surface rather than inside the hair bond structure, it washes out over 1–3 months.
How It Differs From Japanese Straightening
Japanese acid straightening (縮毛矯正) permanently changes the internal bond structure of the hair. Oil straightening only temporarily affects the surface. This is why Japanese straightening is permanent on treated sections while oil straightening fades.
Who It’s Right For
- Mild frizz or light wave — wanting smoother texture without full straightening
- Short stay in Japan (under 3 months)
- Want to keep natural curl but reduce puffiness
- Hair currently too damaged for chemical straightening
