Wavy hair is the most common type I work with among international clients in Tokyo — and one of the types that tends to produce the most satisfying results from acid straightening. Here’s what to realistically expect.
Why Wavy Hair Responds Well

Wavy hair (1C–2C range) has a lighter wave pattern than curly hair, which means it responds fully to acid straightening with a lower formula strength and lower iron temperature than tight curls require. The result on wavy hair is typically the most natural-looking of any hair type: smooth without looking processed, with natural movement preserved at the roots.
Typical Before and After on Wavy Hair
BEFORE — TYPICAL WAVY HAIR
- Wave amplifies significantly in Tokyo’s humidity
- Morning routine: 35–45 minutes
- Frizz at the roots and mid-lengths
- Inconsistent shape throughout the day
AFTER — TYPICAL RESULT
- Smooth through the full day
- Morning routine: 10–15 minutes
- Natural movement preserved at roots
- Consistent shape in all weather
The Most Important Variable: Colour History
For wavy hair, the biggest variable in determining the approach isn’t the wave pattern — it’s colour history. Regular colour (no bleach) is generally straightforward. Bleached sections require different formula pH and iron temperature calibration. Always disclose your full colour history before booking. Bleached hair guide →
