How Often Should You Get Hair Straightening? A Tokyo Stylist’s Complete Frequency Guide

For Expats in Japan

“When should I come back for my next straightening?”

It’s the question I get asked most often at the end of a session. And the honest answer is: it depends — on three things specifically.

Here’s the framework I use with every client, based on 23 years and over 30,000 straightening treatments.

Factor 1: How Strong Is Your Natural Curl?

This is the most important variable.

Strong curl or frizz → every 3–4 months

Strong curl grows out visibly and quickly. Once you have 2–3 cm of new growth, the contrast between the straightened hair and the natural texture at the root becomes noticeable. However, I don’t recommend coming back sooner than 3 months.

Here’s why: when new growth is only 1–2 cm, applying chemicals and running a flat iron that close to previously treated hair puts unnecessary stress on the already-processed sections. Three months gives enough new growth for the treatment to be applied safely without overlapping into the old hair.

Mild wave or light frizz → every 4–6 months

If your natural texture is mild, the new growth blends more naturally with the straightened sections and takes longer to become visually disruptive. You can comfortably extend your interval.

Factor 2: Your Hair Type

Thick or coarse hair → every 3–4 months

Thick hair tends to feel heavy and voluminous as it grows out. Beyond a certain point, a cut alone isn’t enough — re-treating helps manage volume and maintain the overall shape.

Fine or soft hair → every 3–5 months

Fine hair tends to grow more slowly, and it’s also more vulnerable to chemical damage than coarser hair. The longer the interval between treatments, the better for the condition of the hair overall. I always advise fine-haired clients to push the interval as long as they comfortably can.

Factor 3: Hair Length

LengthRecommended interval
Bob / above shouldersEvery 3–4 months
Medium / shoulder lengthEvery 3–5 months
Long / below shouldersEvery 4–6 months
Very longEvery 6 months

For shorter hair, the new growth makes up a larger proportion of the overall length, so the change in texture becomes noticeable sooner. For longer hair, the new growth is a smaller proportion of the total length and blends more easily — so you can wait longer between sessions.

If you’re also coloring your hair, I factor in the damage from color when recommending your interval. Color and straightening together put more cumulative stress on the hair, which sometimes means spacing treatments out a little further.

Special Cases

Bangs / fringe only → every 2–3 months Bangs grow out faster relative to their length and are highly visible. Many clients who get full straightening every 4–6 months come in for a bang touch-up more frequently.

Strong curl + thick hair → every 2.5–3 months This combination grows out the fastest and most visibly. I generally recommend not going shorter than 2.5 months to protect the already-treated hair.

Strong curl + fine hair → every 3–3.5 months Fine hair needs the extra buffer to minimize cumulative damage, even with strong curl.

Aging hair (hair that has become wavy or frizzy with age) → every 3–4 months Aging hair tends to be more porous and drier than younger hair. A slightly longer interval helps maintain the hair’s overall condition.

Fluffy or frizzy ends without strong root curl → every 3–4 months This pattern often comes from damage rather than natural curl. The approach is slightly different — worth discussing in consultation before assuming the same frequency as a strong-curl client.

The Principle Behind All of This

Hair straightening works permanently on the sections it treats. New growth is the only part that needs re-treatment. The goal is to find the interval that:

  1. Keeps your hair looking the way you want it to
  2. Allows enough new growth for safe application without overlapping
  3. Gives your hair time to recover between chemical processes

Every client is different. The schedule above is a starting framework — not a fixed rule. After seeing your hair in person, I can give you a more precise recommendation.

One More Thing

Beautiful hair isn’t achieved in a single session. It’s built gradually over time.

Hair that’s transformed quickly and aggressively tends to degrade quickly. Hair that’s treated carefully, with appropriate intervals and consistent home care, gets better over time — not worse.

The clients whose hair I’m most proud of are the ones I’ve worked with for 3, 5, 10 years. The results compound.
