This is one of the most common home care questions I get — and the answer is both. Oil before straightening for heat protection, and oil after for shine and frizz control. Here’s exactly how to do each stage correctly.
Before Straightening: Heat Protection
Apply a lightweight heat-protective oil to damp hair before blowdrying and before using a flat iron. This creates a protective barrier that prevents the high heat of straightening tools from causing structural damage to the hair fiber.
How much: 1–2 pumps on medium-length hair, focused on the mid-lengths and ends. Never apply oil directly to the scalp before heat styling — it can cause scalding.
Important: The oil must be heat-rated to at least 180°C, and ideally 230°C, to provide meaningful protection. Many drugstore oils don’t meet this threshold. I use Kérastase Huile Chronologiste in the salon — rated to 230°C and genuinely lightweight enough that it doesn’t create buildup.
After Straightening (Post-Blowdry): Shine and Sealing
Apply a small amount of oil to the ends after blowdrying, when the hair is 90–100% dry. This is the stage most people skip — and it’s the one that makes the biggest visible difference to the finish.
When hair is freshly dried and still slightly warm, the cuticle is at its most receptive. Oil applied at this moment gets absorbed more effectively than oil applied to cold, fully dry hair. The result: noticeably better shine and frizz resistance that lasts through the day.
How much: Half a pump, ends only. If hair looks greasy, you’ve used too much — reduce by half next time.
The Two-Stage Technique in Practice
- Stage 1 — Damp hair: 1–2 pumps to mid-lengths and ends before blowdrying
- Stage 2 — 70% dry: Half a pump to ends only — this is the key step most people miss
- Stage 3 — Fully dry (optional): A tiny amount to ends for extra gloss before going out
Which Oil to Use
For straightened hair specifically, silicone-free oils are strongly preferable to silicone-based options. Silicone oils provide immediate gloss but build up on the hair over time, gradually interfering with your straightening result. A lightweight natural oil — camellia, argan, abyssinian — provides heat protection, shine, and frizz control without the buildup problem.
