What to Do the Day Before Japanese Hair Straightening: Complete Preparation Guide

You have an appointment tomorrow. Here is exactly what to do — and what not to do — to get the best possible result from your straightening treatment.

The Night Before

✅ Wash your hair tonight

Come to your appointment with clean hair. Wash tonight rather than the morning of — this gives your hair time to dry completely and your scalp’s natural oils to settle slightly, which actually provides a small amount of protection during the treatment. Use your normal shampoo. Do not use a heavy conditioning mask.

❌ Do not use any styling products

No dry shampoo, no leave-in conditioner, no hairspray, no mousse. Product residue on the hair shaft interferes with how the straightening formula penetrates. Come with hair that is clean and product-free.

❌ Do not color or bleach your hair

If you were thinking about coloring before straightening — don’t. Chemical treatments need to be separated by at least 2 weeks. If you’ve had recent color, tell me at the consultation — it changes the formula and technique I use.

The Morning Of

✅ Come with dry hair

Your hair must be completely dry when you arrive. Do not wash your hair the morning of the appointment — washing and drying takes time from your appointment, and freshly washed hair can be slightly more sensitive than hair washed the night before.

✅ Eat before you come

Straightening appointments take 3–5 hours. Have a proper meal before you arrive. You’ll be more comfortable and the appointment will go more smoothly.

✅ Wear something comfortable you don’t mind getting product on

The treatment involves chemical application near the neck and ears. Wear a top that opens at the back or has a wide neck — not something you’d be concerned about getting a small amount of product on.

❌ Don’t tie your hair

Arrive with your hair down. Elastic bands create crease marks that can affect how the treatment processes at those points. Leave your hair loose from the morning of your appointment.

What to Bring

  • Reference photos — what you want and what you want to avoid. Photos communicate more clearly than words.
  • Your complete chemical history — if you’ve had bleach, color, perms, or previous straightening, tell me even if it was a year or two ago. It matters.
  • Comfortable mindset — the consultation takes 20–30 minutes and the treatment 3–5 hours. There is no rushing.

After Your Appointment: The Critical 48 Hours

This is as important as the preparation. For 48 hours after your treatment:

  • Do not wash your hair — the bonds are still stabilizing
  • Do not tie or pin your hair — any crease marks at this stage become permanent kinks
  • Do not tuck hair behind your ears — same reason
  • Avoid heavy sweating — moisture affects the bonding process
  • Sleep with hair loose — use a silk pillowcase if you have one

After 48 hours: switch to silicone-free shampoo for best long-term results. Best shampoos after straightening →
