The Kérastase Huile Chronologiste — the “black bottle” — is the hair oil I use in my Ginza salon before every blowdry. Three years of daily professional use. Here’s my honest assessment of who it’s genuinely right for, who should consider something else, and how it performs specifically on Japanese acid-straightened hair.
Why I Use This in My Salon
I’ve tested most of the widely recommended hair oils professionally. The Huile Chronologiste is what I kept using. The reason: the heat protection to 230°C is genuine and consistent, it doesn’t create buildup that affects how subsequent blowdrys perform, and the result on straightened hair — specifically the way it enhances the natural shine of Chinese, Singaporean, and Southeast Asian hair — is better than alternatives I’ve used.
I’m not paid by Kérastase. This is what I chose after testing alternatives, because my clients’ results are my professional reputation.
Who It’s Right For
✅ Buy this if you:
- Have had Japanese acid straightening and want to protect and enhance the result
- Have naturally high-shine hair (Chinese, Singaporean, Southeast Asian hair types) — the oil amplifies this significantly
- Use heat tools regularly at 200°C+ and want genuine protection, not just surface coating
- Want an oil that won’t create buildup over weeks of daily use
- Have fine to medium hair — heavier oils can weigh fine hair down; this one doesn’t
Who Should Consider Something Else
❌ Look elsewhere if you:
- Have very thick or coarse hair that needs heavy moisture — a richer treatment mask may serve you better than an oil
- Are on a tight budget — at ¥5,000–8,000, it’s a premium product. For budget alternatives, a lighter Japanese argan oil works reasonably well
- Don’t use heat tools — the 230°C protection is its primary strength; without heat styling, you’re not getting full value
How It Compares to Other Oils
| Factor | Kérastase Huile Chronologiste | Standard Argan Oil | Heavy Camellia Oil |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heat protection | 230°C genuine | Moderate | Low |
| Buildup tendency | Low (lightweight formula) | Low-medium | High |
| Shine enhancement | Excellent | Good | Very high (heavy) |
| Best for | Straightened hair, daily use | General use | Very dry/coarse hair |
How to Use It After Japanese Straightening
- Timing: Apply when hair is 80% dry — not soaking wet, not bone dry
- Amount: 2–3 drops for fine/medium hair, 4–5 for thick hair. Less than you think
- Method: Warm between palms first, then work through mid-lengths to ends. Avoid roots
- Then: Blowdry with concentrator nozzle downward, cool shot to finish
Combined with a silicone-free shampoo, this is the two-product home care setup I recommend to clients who want to maintain their straightening result as long as possible. Best shampoo after straightening →
