I do hair straightening treatments every working day. After each appointment, I tell every client the same thing: the shampoo you use at home will determine how long this result lasts. After watching thousands of clients over 23 years, I know exactly which shampoos extend the treatment — and which ones quietly destroy it.
This is not a sponsored post. These are the products I’ve seen perform, tested on real clients in Tokyo’s humidity, over years of professional observation.
Why Most Shampoos Ruin Straightening Results
The problem is silicone. Most shampoos — including many premium brands — contain silicone (listed as dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, or similar). Silicone provides immediate smoothness but builds up on the hair shaft over weeks. This buildup makes the cuticle progressively more porous — which means it becomes more reactive to humidity and the straightening result degrades faster than it should.
Clients who use silicone-heavy shampoos after straightening typically need a touch-up in 4–5 months. Clients who switch to silicone-free typically get 6–8 months. Same treatment, same stylist, different shampoo.
🥇 Best Overall: SBCP Raw Mineral Shampoo
This is what I recommend to almost every client after straightening. It’s silicone-free, formulated without the buildup-causing ingredients that undermine treatment results, and it actively improves cuticle function over time rather than just providing surface smoothing.
Who it’s for: Anyone who has had straightening, wants to extend their result, and is willing to switch from their current shampoo. Works for all hair types.
Who it’s not for: Clients who need heavy conditioning for very dry or damaged hair — the lightweight formula may feel insufficient on heavily compromised hair.
⭐ #1 RECOMMENDED — MOST CLIENTS
SBCP Raw Mineral Shampoo
Silicone-free · extends result 4–6 weeks · improves cuticle over time
🥈 Best for Fine or Damaged Hair: Kérastase Bain Après-Soleil
For clients whose hair is on the finer or more damaged side after straightening, a pure mineral shampoo can feel too stripping. Kérastase’s gentler formulas are silicone-conscious and provide the moisture balance that delicate hair needs without the buildup problem.
Who it’s for: Fine hair, hair that feels dry or brittle after treatment, clients who had bleached or heavily highlighted sections treated.
Who it’s not for: Clients on a budget — Kérastase is genuinely premium priced.
🥉 Best Budget: Amatora MezzoForte
Japanese-formulated, available widely, and significantly more affordable than the top two options. Not silicone-free but uses lower-weight silicones that build up more slowly. A practical option for clients who want a noticeable improvement over their current shampoo without the full commitment of a specialist product.
What to Avoid Completely
- Any shampoo with dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, or amodimethicone — these are the heaviest silicones and build up fastest on straightened hair
- 2-in-1 shampoo-conditioners — almost always silicone-heavy by design
- Hot water washing — opens the cuticle before you’ve even started; max 38°C for straightened hair
- Air drying — the cuticle sets unevenly; always blowdry
The Complete Aftercare Routine (What I Tell Every Client)
- Wash with silicone-free shampoo in cool water (≤38°C)
- Apply lightweight conditioner to ends only, rinse thoroughly
- Towel dry gently — pat, don’t rub
- Apply non-silicone heat protection oil to mid-lengths while 80% damp
- Blowdry completely with concentrator nozzle aimed downward
- Finish with cool shot for 30 seconds
For the heat protection oil, I use Kérastase Huile Chronologiste before every blowdry in my salon — it’s non-silicone, provides 230°C protection, and enhances the natural shine that straightening produces. Full aftercare product guide →
DAILY SALON USE — PRE-BLOWDRY OIL

Frequently Asked Questions
When can I wash my hair after straightening?
Wait 48 hours after your treatment before washing. During these 48 hours, also avoid tying or pinning your hair — any crease marks at this stage can become permanent kinks.
Can I use conditioner after straightening?
Yes — lightweight conditioner on mid-lengths and ends is fine. Avoid heavy masks and silicone-based conditioners. Apply to ends only, not roots.
My hair feels dry after straightening — what’s wrong?
Two most common causes: (1) the treatment was done at too high a pH for your hair’s condition, or (2) silicone buildup from post-treatment products is making the cuticle more porous. Switch to a silicone-free shampoo and use a non-silicone oil before every blowdry. If dryness persists, contact me — a photo tells me a lot. See: straightening on damaged hair →
