The treatment is done. Now the results depend almost entirely on what you do next. Here is the complete care guide — from the moment you leave the salon to the long-term maintenance that keeps your hair looking its best for months.
Day 1–2: The Critical Window
The 48 hours after your straightening appointment are the most important for the final result. The chemical bonds that were restructured during treatment are still completing their stabilization process. Any disruption during this window can compromise the outcome.
Do not:
- Wash your hair — this is the most important rule. Water interferes with bond stabilization.
- Tie, clip, or pin your hair — elastic marks can become permanent kinks in freshly straightened hair
- Tuck hair behind your ears — same reason
- Get caught in rain or sweat heavily — if this happens, blowdry immediately on low heat
- Sleep on a rough cotton pillowcase — use silk or satin, or loosely wrap hair before sleeping
You can:
- Apply a small amount of lightweight hair oil to the ends
- Gently blowdry on low heat if needed
- Leave hair completely down and undisturbed
Day 3–7: First Wash and Establishing Routine
After 48 hours, you can wash your hair — but the way you wash matters significantly for long-term results.
- Water temperature: 38°C maximum — this is non-negotiable. Hot water opens the cuticle and begins degrading your straightening result immediately. Cool to comfortably warm only.
- Silicone-free shampoo only — switching to silicone-free shampoo is the single most impactful change you can make for long-term results. Silicone builds up on the hair shaft and interferes with the straightening result over weeks.
- Blowdry every time — never air dry — air drying allows the cuticle to set unevenly, which accelerates frizz returning.
- Oil before blowdrying — apply 1–2 pumps of lightweight heat-protective oil to damp ends before starting the dryer.
Week 2–4: Building the Routine
By week two, the straightening result is fully stabilized. Your focus now is maintaining the condition of the hair and extending the life of the result.
- Deep conditioning mask 1–2 times per week — replace your conditioner with a quality treatment mask. The Kérastase Masque Chronologiste delivers significantly more active ingredients than standard conditioners and transforms the feel of the hair in a single 5-minute application.
- Continue silicone-free shampoo daily — this is the habit that makes the most difference over months.
- Pre-blowdry oil every time — don’t skip this step. The cumulative heat protection makes a real difference to the long-term condition of your hair.
Month 1–3: Long-Term Maintenance
After the first month, your straightening result should look and feel excellent with correct care. The main thing to watch for is new growth at the roots — hair grows approximately 1–1.5cm per month, and the new growth will have your natural texture.
- New growth at the roots is normal — it doesn’t mean the treatment has worn off
- Most clients return for a touch-up (root treatment only) every 4–6 months
- Deep conditioning becomes even more important as the treated sections age — weekly treatment masks maintain elasticity and prevent brittleness
