Can You Get Hair Straightening and Color in the Same Session? (An Honest Answer from a Tokyo Stylist)

Client Stories

“Can I do straightening and color at the same time?”

This is one of the most common questions I receive — from clients in Japan, from expats across Asia, and from visitors who want to make the most of a single appointment. It’s a completely reasonable question, and the answer is more nuanced than most salons will tell you.

Here’s the full picture.

The Short Answer

Yes — in most cases, straightening and color can be done in the same session.

But the order matters, the technique matters, and the condition of your hair going in matters. Done correctly, combining both treatments in a single appointment gives you excellent results with no more damage than doing them separately. Done incorrectly, it can leave your hair compromised.

Here’s exactly what you need to know.

Why the Order Matters

The order in which straightening and color are applied has a significant impact on the final result.

Hair Straightening first, then color: This is my preferred approach for most clients. Hair Straightening is applied and processed first, the hair is rinsed and partially dried, and then color is applied. The straightening treatment has already restructured the hair’s bonds — meaning the color can penetrate evenly into a stable, smoothed hair shaft.

The advantage: the color result is more even and predictable, because the cuticle has been closed and smoothed by the straightening process before the color goes in.

Color first, then straightening: This approach is sometimes used but requires more care. Color slightly raises the porosity of the hair, which means the straightening chemical may penetrate faster than it would on uncolored hair. The stylist needs to account for this by adjusting timing and formula.

The risk: if the stylist doesn’t adjust for the color’s effect on porosity, the straightening chemical can process unevenly or too aggressively.

My approach: I assess each client individually before deciding on the order. For most people, straightening first gives me more control over the color result. For some hair types and color goals, color first makes more sense. I explain my reasoning during the consultation.

What Types of Color Work Best in the Same Session

Not all color services are equally straightforward to combine with straightening.

Single color / gray coverage → Excellent The most common combination I do. Single-process color and Hair Straightening combine very well in a single session. Gray coverage in particular benefits from the smooth, closed cuticle that Hair Straightening creates — the color takes more evenly and the gray coverage is more complete.

Highlights → Possible, with planning Highlights require more careful coordination because different sections of the hair are being treated differently. It’s doable in a single session, but the appointment will be longer and requires a stylist who is experienced in managing both processes simultaneously.

Balayage → Case by case Balayage involves lightening — which raises porosity significantly in the treated sections. Combining balayage with straightening in the same session is possible but requires very careful assessment of whether the hair can handle both processes without compromising condition.

Bleach → Requires consultation Full bleaching and straightening in the same session is generally not recommended. Bleaching and straightening are both aggressive processes — doing both on the same day puts significant cumulative stress on the hair. In most cases I recommend spacing them out by at least 2 weeks, sometimes longer depending on the hair’s condition.

What Makes It Safe

The key to combining color and straightening safely comes down to three things:

① Correct assessment before you start The stylist needs to evaluate your hair’s current condition — its porosity, elasticity, damage history, and the density and type of color already in it — before deciding on the approach and formula. Skipping this step is where most combination treatment problems begin.

② The right chemical selection Hair Straightening formulas vary in strength and pH. For hair that has already been colored or is about to be colored, the formula needs to be adjusted to account for the changed porosity. Using the same formula for all clients regardless of color history is a common mistake.

③ Proper conditioning at every stage When combining treatments, I apply keratin protein, collagen, and lipid treatments during the process — not just at the end — to replenish what the chemical processes remove. This is what keeps the hair feeling soft and healthy rather than dry and over-processed after a long appointment.

What to Expect in Terms of Time

A combined straightening and color session takes longer than either treatment alone. Here’s a realistic estimate:

TreatmentTime
Hair Straightening only3–4 hours
Single color only1.5–2 hours
Hair Straightening + single color4–5 hours
Hair Straightening + highlights5–6 hours
Gray coverage + straightening4–5 hours

I always recommend allowing extra time on your first combined appointment. There’s no benefit to rushing a chemical process — the timing needs to be right for your specific hair, not for the clock.

Questions to Ask Before You Book

If you’re planning to get both services done at another salon, here are the questions that will tell you a lot about how prepared the stylist is:

“In what order will you do the straightening and color, and why?” A good answer explains the reasoning for their specific approach with your hair. A bad answer is “we always do color first” or “it doesn’t matter.”

“Will you adjust the straightening formula for my colored hair?” The correct answer is yes — colored hair has different porosity and needs a different approach.

“How long will the appointment take?” If the answer seems too short for both treatments, it’s worth asking how they plan to manage the timing.

“What conditioning treatments do you use between processes?” A stylist who does combination treatments correctly will have a clear answer — keratin treatments, protein treatments, lipid replenishment — applied during the process, not just at the end.

The Most Common Combination I Do

By far the most frequent combined appointment I see is:

Gray coverage + Hair Straightening

This combination is particularly popular among clients in their 40s, 50s, and 60s — and it makes complete sense. Aging hair often develops both gray and changing texture at the same time. Addressing both in a single session is efficient, and the results complement each other beautifully — smooth, straight hair with even, vibrant gray coverage.

The key for gray coverage combined with straightening is applying the color to fully cover the gray before the straightening process locks in the new structure. When done in the right order, the gray coverage is complete and the straightened result is soft and natural.

After a Combined Session: Home Care

After a combined straightening and color session, home care is even more important than after a single treatment.

Shampoo: Use an amino acid-based, silicone-free, color-safe shampoo. Silicone buildup is the most common reason both the color and the straightening result fade faster than they should.

Recommended: SBCP Raw Mineral Shampoo & Treatment — amino acid formula, silicone-free, suitable for color-treated and straightened hair.

Weekly mask: Once a week, replace your regular conditioner with a deep treatment mask.

Recommended: SBCP Raw Mineral Hair Mask

Hair oil: Apply before blowdrying to protect from heat damage and add lasting shine.

Recommended: Kérastase Huile Chronologiste

Avoid washing for 48 hours after the combined treatment — this gives both the straightening and color processes time to fully stabilize.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does combining treatments cause more damage? Not necessarily — if done correctly. The key is proper assessment, the right formula selection, and conditioning treatments applied throughout the process. Done well, the result is no more damaging than doing the treatments separately.

Can I go lighter (blonde) and get straightening in the same session? Full lightening (bleaching) and straightening in the same session is generally not recommended. I’d suggest spacing them out by at least 2 weeks. Contact me and I’ll give you a specific recommendation based on your hair.

My hair is already colored. Can I still get straightening? Yes — this is one of the most common situations I work with. The key is assessing the current condition of your colored hair before selecting the formula. Send me a photo and I’ll give you an honest assessment.

How long does the color last after a combined treatment? The same as it would after color alone — typically 4–8 weeks for single process color before roots show, and several months before the color fades significantly. The straightening doesn’t affect color longevity when done in the right order.

Can I book this for my first visit? Yes. I’ll do a full consultation at the start of the appointment to assess your hair before confirming the approach. If anything about your hair’s condition suggests we should adjust the plan, I’ll discuss that with you before we start.
