Is Curly Hair Common in Japan? What Foreigners Should Know

Client Stories

A question I hear regularly from expats and tourists: “Is curly hair unusual here? Will Japanese salons know how to handle it?” Here is an honest answer from a stylist who has worked with international clients for 23 years in Tokyo.

Is Curly Hair Common Among Japanese People?

Natural tight curl is uncommon among Japanese people — most Japanese hair is straight to mildly wavy. However, the Japanese salon industry has developed some of the world’s most refined techniques for managing wave, frizz, and texture. This is why Japan is known for acid straightening (縮毛矯正) — sustained demand has driven decades of technical refinement.

What This Means for Foreign Clients with Curly Hair

Japanese stylists are generally highly skilled at managing wave and frizz. Experience with very tight curl patterns (3C and above) varies significantly by salon — finding a stylist with direct experience is important. For straightening specifically: Japanese acid straightening works on most curl patterns, but proper assessment before treatment matters. Send a photo first — I will tell you honestly what is possible for your hair type.
