Hair Straightening Before and After: Real Results from a Tokyo Salon

Before and after photos are the most useful thing you can look at when deciding whether to get hair straightening — and the most misleading, if you don’t know what you’re looking at.

After 23 years of straightening hair in Tokyo, here’s what I want clients to understand before they sit in the chair.

What Good Results Actually Look Like

The best Japanese hair straightening results share these characteristics:

  • Soft, not stiff — the hair should move when you turn your head, not sit rigid and plastic-looking. If a before-and-after shows hair that looks like it’s been ironed flat with no movement, that’s not a good result.
  • Shiny without looking artificial — a healthy shine comes from the cuticle lying flat. If the hair looks wet or lacquered, something has been overdone.
  • Volume at the roots — good straightening preserves natural root lift. Hair that lies completely flat against the head from root to tip has been over-processed or the technique was wrong.
  • Natural movement at the ends — the ends should have slight movement, not be pin-straight. This is especially true for longer hair.

Before and After: What Changes by Hair Type

Fine, Slightly Wavy Hair

Before: Slight frizz, particularly in humidity. Hair looks undefined and lacks shine. Blowdrying takes significant effort to achieve a smooth finish.

After: Smooth, reflective, defined. Blowdrying time cut by 50–70%. Humidity resistance significantly improved. Result looks natural — people may not even realize straightening has been done. This hair type often produces the most seamless results.

Medium Wave / Moderate Curl

Before: Visible wave pattern, significant frizz in humidity, time-consuming to manage. Hair may feel coarse or dry at the ends.

After: Noticeably straighter with natural movement. The transformation is visible but doesn’t look processed. Root lift is maintained. Hair is soft and responds well to light products. This is the most common hair type I see in my Tokyo practice among international clients.

Strong Curl / Tight Wave

Before: Defined curl pattern that requires significant daily management. Volume and frizz are the main concerns.

After: The most dramatic transformation. Hair is straight and manageable, with a softness that often surprises clients who expected a stiff result. The key is using the right formula for the curl strength — this is where stylist experience matters most. Under-processing leaves wave; over-processing causes damage.

Previously Colored or Bleached Hair

Before: Colored hair that is frizzy, dry, or lacking shine. The curl pattern may be inconsistent due to uneven porosity from color processing.

After: When done correctly on appropriate candidates, colored hair after straightening can actually look better than before — softer, more uniform in texture, with improved shine. The key is accurate assessment of the hair’s current condition before starting. Not all colored hair is a good candidate.

What Doesn’t Change

Hair straightening changes texture and manageability. It doesn’t change:

  • Hair color
  • Hair density or volume in the sense of how many hairs you have
  • New growth — roots will grow in with your natural texture and will need to be treated periodically
  • The health of already-damaged hair — straightening on very damaged hair can improve its appearance temporarily but won’t repair underlying damage

How Long Results Last

  • The straightened sections: permanent — those hairs stay straight
  • New growth: grows in with your natural texture, typically needs treating every 4–6 months
  • Overall softness and condition: maintained with proper home care — specifically silicone-free shampoo and a quality heat-protective oil before blowdrying

What to Bring to Your Appointment

  • Photos of results you like — length, texture, finish
  • Photos of results you don’t want — be explicit about what to avoid
  • Your complete chemical history — all coloring, bleaching, previous straightening
  • Questions about home care — a good stylist will answer these before you leave
