Hair Treatment vs. Straightening: Which Should You Do First? (A Stylist’s Honest Answer)

For Expats in Japan

“Should I get straightening or a hair treatment first?”

It’s one of the most common questions I hear — and the answer depends on your hair type. Let me break it down clearly.

First, Let’s Talk About “Hair Treatment” (髪質改善)

The term “hair treatment” (髪質改善) has become popular in Japan over the last few years, but it means different things at different salons. At some salons it’s a deep conditioning service. At others, it’s a blend of treatment and straightening agents used to reduce volume. There’s no single industry definition.

My version of hair treatment is a cumulative keratin and collagen treatment — meaning it builds up in your hair over multiple sessions and keeps improving. I use pure keratin protein, collagen, lipids, and chitosan to seal nutrients inside the hair shaft. The results get noticeably better with each session.

So Which Comes First?

If you don’t have natural curl or frizz: Start with a hair treatment. It repairs damage, adds softness and shine, and improves the overall condition of your hair without any chemical straightening.

If you have natural curl, wave, or frizz: Get straightening first. Once your hair is smoothed and straightened, a follow-up hair treatment a few months later will restore the softness and moisture that straightening can reduce over time. Many clients combine both in the same session — this is also possible.

If you already have straightened hair: Hair straightening results in very smooth hair immediately after treatment, but after a few months the hair can become dry and stiff. This is the perfect time for a hair treatment — it brings back the softness of the original result.

Why the Order Matters

Straightening chemically restructures the hair’s bonds. Hair treatment works by adding nutrients and sealing the cuticle. If you apply a heavy treatment before straightening, it can interfere with how the straightening chemicals penetrate the hair — potentially affecting the result.

The correct sequence: straightening first, treatment later (or both simultaneously with the right technique).

What I Use in My Hair Treatments

The products I use and recommend for home maintenance:

In-salon treatment base: Keratin protein, collagen serum, lipid complex, chitosan sealant — applied in sequence and sealed with cuticle massage.

For home care between sessions:

Who This Is For

✅ Hair that has never responded well to straightening ✅ Hair that’s been bleached or color-treated ✅ Hair that’s become dry, wavy, or frizzy due to aging (common after 40) ✅ Anyone who wants the smoothness of straightening without the stiff, artificial finish ✅ Those who want to combine color and straightening in one session

My Approach

Every session is one-on-one from consultation to finish. I take time to understand your hair history before recommending anything. My goal isn’t just to make your hair look good today — it’s to plan for where your hair will be in two or three years.
