Price is usually one of the first questions people ask before their first straightening appointment. Here’s what you should expect to pay in Tokyo in 2026, why prices vary so much, and how to make sure you’re comparing fairly.
Price Range in Tokyo: 2026
| Tier | Price Range | What You Get |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | ¥8,000–15,000 | Often alkaline formula · limited consultation · less experienced with non-Japanese hair |
| Mid-range | ¥15,000–30,000 | Mix of acid/alkaline · varies significantly by stylist |
| Premium | ¥25,000–50,000+ | Acid-based formula · thorough consultation · experience with diverse hair types |
My pricing falls in the premium range: ¥25,000–50,000 depending on hair length, thickness, and condition. This is quoted individually after the pre-appointment consultation.
Why the Price Difference Matters
Budget straightening often uses alkaline formulas (pH 8–10) — cheaper and faster, but more damaging and more likely to produce stiff, processed-looking results. Premium straightening uses modern acid formulas (pH 4–6) — gentler, softer result, significantly lower damage to color-treated or previously processed hair.
For foreign clients with non-Japanese hair types, the formula and technique differences are amplified. Standard Japanese protocols are calibrated for Japanese hair. Adapting them correctly for Southeast Asian, South Asian, European, or mixed hair requires specific experience — which is more often found in premium-tier salons. How Long Does It Last and What’s the Cost Per Month?
Root touch-ups are needed every 5–6 months for most clients. At ¥25,000–50,000 per appointment, that works out to roughly ¥4,000–8,000 per month — significantly less than many clients spend on styling products that don’t work in Tokyo’s humidity, and far less than the time cost of 40–50 minute daily routines.
