Acid Straightening in Tokyo: What to Expect — English Consultation Available

Acid straightening (酸性縮毛矯正) is the modern approach to Japanese hair straightening — softer results, less damage, and in my experience more appropriate for the range of hair types I see among international clients in Tokyo. Here’s what to expect from the process.

Acid vs Alkaline: The Key Difference

Alkaline (older method)

  • pH 8–12
  • Works aggressively
  • Often stiff result
  • Higher damage potential

Acid (modern method) ✅

  • pH 4–6
  • Gentler mechanism
  • Soft, natural result
  • Lower damage profile

What the Process Looks Like

  • Pre-appointment: Send a photo first — I’ll assess your hair type and give you an honest expectation of results
  • Consultation (20–30 min): Full discussion of your hair history, what you want, and what’s realistic
  • Application: Acid formula applied carefully, with margins at roots and ends to avoid overlapping
  • Iron work: The most skilled step — temperature and pressure calibrated to your hair type
  • Finish: Blowdry and style; aftercare guidance specific to your hair
  • Total time: 3–5 hours depending on hair length and thickness

Who It Works Best For

In my experience, acid straightening tends to work particularly well for clients with wavy to moderately curly hair, color-treated hair that needs a gentler approach, and clients who want a natural-looking result rather than pin-straight. For very strong curl patterns or heavily bleached hair, I’ll discuss what’s realistic before we proceed. Is Japanese straightening worth it for you? →

I’ll confirm whether acid straightening is right for your hair and give you a realistic expectation of results. No commitment required.
