Hair Straightening for Thick Hair: What Works and What to Expect

Thick hair is one of the hair types I work with most among international clients — Southeast Asian, South Asian, and many mixed heritage clients have thick, dense hair that responds to Tokyo’s humidity in a specific way. Here’s what works for thick hair specifically.

Why Thick Hair in Tokyo Is a Particular Challenge

Thick hair has more total surface area absorbing atmospheric moisture. In Tokyo’s peak humidity (June–September), this means more moisture uptake, more volume amplification, and more time spent managing the result in the morning. In my experience, clients with thick hair often see the most dramatic time savings after straightening — going from 50+ minutes to 10–15 minutes is common.

What’s Different About Treating Thick Hair

  • Formula strength: Thick hair often requires a slightly stronger formula than fine or medium hair — but this needs to be calibrated against the hair’s protein structure and any chemical history
  • Processing time: Tends to be on the longer end — thick hair takes more time to process evenly
  • Iron work: Requires more passes and more careful tension to achieve even results throughout
  • Result: In my experience, thick hair with strong natural shine often produces some of the most visually impressive results after straightening — the natural lustre amplifies significantly
