Hair Straightening in Japan vs Korea vs China: What’s Different

Japanese, Korean, and Chinese hair salons all offer straightening treatments — but there are real technical differences between them that affect the result. Having worked in Japan for 23 years and internationally in Singapore, here’s my honest assessment.

Japanese Straightening (縮毛矯正)

Japan developed acid-based straightening technology over decades, driven by the specific challenge of Tokyo’s humidity and the demand for a result that looks natural rather than processed. Modern Japanese acid straightening (pH 4–6) is technically sophisticated — the formula chemistry, iron work technique, and application method have been refined through enormous professional volume. The result, when done well, is typically the softest and most natural-looking of the three. Complete guide →

Korean Straightening

Korea’s salon industry is world-class, and Korean straightening has developed its own technical approach. In my experience comparing client results, Korean straightening tends to produce clean, consistent results — particularly strong for fine to medium hair. Where I notice differences: some Korean techniques use slightly different iron temperatures and application methods that produce a result that’s excellent but sometimes slightly different in texture from the Japanese approach.

Chinese Salon Straightening

China’s major cities have excellent high-end salons with strong technical training. Where variation tends to be higher is in the mid-range market — formula quality and technique consistency can vary more than in Japan or Korea’s professional market. For clients with complex hair histories, the pre-consultation process matters most.

Which Is Best for Tokyo Residents?

For clients living in Tokyo specifically, Japanese straightening makes the most sense — formulas and techniques developed for Tokyo’s specific humidity conditions, applied by stylists who work in those conditions daily. The result is calibrated for the environment you’ll be in. Singapore vs Tokyo comparison →
