Going to a hair salon in Japan as a foreigner is a different experience from what most expats are used to — and not always in the ways they expect. Here’s what’s actually different, and how to prepare for it.
What’s Different About Japanese Hair Salons
The Experience Is More Formal
Japanese salons operate with a level of ceremony that feels unfamiliar to most Western clients. You’ll be greeted formally, offered tea or water, guided through each stage of the appointment, and given a formal goodbye. This isn’t stiff — it’s considered. Most expats come to appreciate it after a few visits.
Silence Is Normal
In many Western countries, talking to your stylist throughout the appointment is part of the experience. In Japan, silence is completely normal and comfortable. Don’t feel obligated to fill the silence — many Japanese clients prefer a quiet appointment.
The Shampoo Experience Is Different
You recline fully back at the basin — not lean forward. The water temperature is cooler than you might expect. A scalp massage is standard. Most expats end up loving this part of the experience.
No Tipping
Do not tip. This is not a cultural norm in Japan, and in some contexts can create awkwardness. The price on the menu is the complete price.
The Specific Challenges for Foreign Clients
- Language barrier — most Japanese stylists don’t speak English at a conversational level, and hair terminology is specialized
- Hair type mismatch — Japanese stylists train primarily on Japanese hair, which is structurally different from most non-Asian hair types
- Communication of intent — describing what you want in enough detail to get it requires preparation and specific techniques
How to Find a Salon That Works for You
- Search Instagram for stylists with non-Japanese clients in their portfolio
- Look for stylists with international work experience
- Send a photo and message before booking — the response quality tells you everything
- Ask specifically about experience with your hair type, not just “English OK”
