Finding a hair salon in Tokyo that can genuinely handle non-Japanese hair is harder than it should be. Here’s exactly what to look for — and what the common pitfalls are.
The Core Problem
Tokyo has exceptional hair salons. But almost all of them are trained primarily for Japanese hair — straight, medium texture, specific curl patterns. “International friendly” often means “we can take your booking in English” not “we have deep experience with your specific hair type.” These are very different things.
What to Look For
✅ International work experience
A stylist who has worked in Singapore, Hong Kong, London, or any diverse international city has encountered a much wider range of hair types in professional settings. This translates directly to better results on non-Japanese hair.
✅ Portfolio showing diverse hair types
Ask to see before/after photos. Not just the salon’s general Instagram feed — specifically examples of hair similar to yours. If the portfolio is exclusively straight, fine Japanese hair, proceed cautiously.
✅ They ask questions before booking
Any stylist with real experience with non-Japanese hair will want to know your hair history before agreeing to a treatment. Chemical history, texture, what you’ve tried before. A stylist who says “just come in, no problem” without asking anything hasn’t done this enough.
Red Flags
- “English OK” with no follow-up — means booking only, not consultation
- No before/after photos of non-Japanese hair types
- Immediate yes to every treatment with no questions
- No mention of your chemical history mattering
