Short answer: modern acid-based straightening causes significantly less damage than older alkaline methods — but it’s not zero. Here’s the honest breakdown.
The Old vs The New
The straightening that earned a reputation for damage was alkaline-based (pH 8–12), common until the early 2010s. It worked by aggressively opening the cuticle and restructuring bonds inside — effective but harsh. Modern acid-based straightening (縮毛矯正, pH 4–6) achieves the same result through a gentler mechanism, causing measurably less cuticle damage. The “straightening ruins your hair” reputation largely belongs to the older method.

What Causes Damage in Modern Straightening
- Overlapping on previously treated sections — the most common cause of accumulating damage. Re-treating already-straight hair is unnecessary and damaging. Skilled stylists treat only new growth.
- Wrong formula for hair condition — bleached or over-processed hair needs different pH and timing. Using standard protocols on compromised hair causes damage.
- Too-high iron temperature — heat damage accumulates. Professional stylists adjust temperature to hair condition.
- Aftercare products with heavy silicone — builds up on the cuticle and makes it progressively more reactive over time.
Wrong formula strength — a formula too strong for the hair type is the primary cause of straightening damage. Fine or already-processed hair needs a weaker formula; using the same strength on everyone is the most common mistake.
Incorrect iron temperature — the flat-iron step needs precise control. Too high and the protein structure breaks down further than intended; most heat damage traces back to a temperature set too high for the hair being treated.
My Hair Is Already Damaged — Can I Still Get It?
This is one of the most common questions I receive before appointments. The answer depends on what “damaged” actually means for your specific hair — damage is a spectrum, not a yes/no state.
Level 1 · Mild — slight dryness, minor frizz, a little lost elasticity from heat styling or single-process color. Straightening is generally fine, with an acid-based formula at appropriate strength.
Level 2 · Moderate — noticeable porosity, some breakage, significant dryness from repeated color or highlights. Straightening is possible, but only with careful assessment and a significantly weaker formula.
Level 3 · Severe — significant breakage, extreme porosity, hair that feels gummy when wet. I do not recommend straightening at this stage — treatment, conditioning, and trimming come first.
A quick self-check: gently stretch a wet strand. Healthy hair stretches and returns; damaged hair snaps or stays stretched. Not sure where your hair falls? Send me your hair photos for an initial assessment — the final decision is always made in person at the salon.
For Bleached or Color-Treated Hair
This is where care is most needed. Bleached hair has weakened internal protein structure — the same structure the straightening process works on. The risk of damage is real and requires assessment before proceeding. An honest stylist will tell you if your hair isn’t in condition for the treatment. Complete guide →

How to Protect Your Hair Afterwards
Whatever your starting condition, aftercare decides how long the result stays beautiful: switch to a silicone-free shampoo, use a heat-protective oil before blow-drying, deep-condition weekly, and always be honest with your stylist about your complete chemical history. My full aftercare guide covers the routine step by step.
