Korean Hair in Japan: Before & After Japanese Acid Straightening in Tokyo

For Expats in Japan

Korean hair in Japan faces a specific set of challenges — and they are different from what most people expect. This client, originally from Korea and currently living in Tokyo, came in with naturally wavy, frizz-prone hair that had become increasingly difficult to manage in Japan’s climate. Here is what Japanese acid straightening achieved, across four before-and-after perspectives.

Why Korean Hair Often Struggles in Tokyo

💬 KENJI — Ginza, 23 years

“Korean hair texture varies widely — from very straight to wavy and frizz-prone. The clients who struggle most in Tokyo are those with natural wave or any curl, particularly during tsuyu (rainy season). What surprises many Korean clients is that the humidity they experience in Seoul in summer is intense but seasonal. Tokyo’s rainy season is sustained — 80–90% humidity for weeks without relief. The hair absorbs moisture continuously and any wave pattern reasserts itself regardless of styling.”

Is Japanese Acid Straightening Different from Korean Straightening Treatments?

Many Korean clients have experience with straightening treatments done in Seoul. Japanese acid straightening (縮毛矯正, shukumo kyousei) is in the same category — both use a reducing agent to restructure the hair’s internal bonds — but there are meaningful differences in formula design and technique.

Japanese acid straightening uses a lower pH formula (pH 4–6) compared to many alkaline straightening treatments (pH 9–12). This produces a softer, more natural result and is gentler on colour-treated hair. The ironwork technique in Japan is also highly refined — section-by-section precision that takes more time but produces a more controlled and natural outcome.

Things to Know Before Treatment

  • New growth comes in with your natural texture — the treated sections are permanently straight, but new hair grows in naturally. Most clients return every 5–8 months for a root touch-up.
  • Colour-treated hair is usually fine — the acid formula is gentler than alkaline alternatives. Send photos and your colour history before booking so I can assess your specific situation.
  • Allow 3–5 hours — do not schedule tight appointments on treatment day.
  • No washing for 48 hours after — this allows the reformed bonds to fully stabilise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do this if I have had Korean straightening treatments before?

Generally yes. Previous straightening treatments do not prevent you from doing Japanese acid straightening. The main consideration is the current condition of your hair — particularly if you have also bleached or heavily coloured. Send photos with your treatment history and I will give you an honest assessment.

Will it look natural, not stiff?

Yes — the acid formula and precise ironwork produce hair that moves naturally. The result you see in the photos above is typical: smooth and controlled without the flat, stiff appearance some clients associate with older alkaline treatments.

How long does it last?

The treated sections are permanently straight. New growth at the roots comes in with your natural texture and needs to be retreated every 5–8 months depending on how quickly your hair grows.

Do you speak English? Can I consult in English?

Yes — all consultations and appointments can be conducted in English. Contact me via Instagram DM, WhatsApp, or WeChat. Send photos of your hair with a description of your chemical history and I will respond with an honest assessment and accurate pricing.
