One of the most common questions before appointments: “My hair is damaged — can I still get straightening?” The answer depends on what “damaged” actually means for your specific hair.
Damage Is a Spectrum
Level 1: Mild damage — Straightening: generally fine
Slight dryness, minor frizz, slight loss of elasticity from regular heat styling or single-process color. Acid-based treatment at appropriate strength is suitable.
Level 2: Moderate damage — Straightening: possible with careful assessment
Noticeable porosity, some breakage, significant dryness from multiple color treatments or regular highlights. Formula must be significantly weaker than for healthy hair.
Level 3: Severe damage — Straightening: not recommended
Significant breakage, extreme porosity, visible texture damage (gummy when wet). Treatment, conditioning, and trimming are the correct path first.
The Honest Tests
- Elasticity test: Stretch a wet strand gently. Healthy hair stretches ~30% and returns. Damaged hair snaps immediately or doesn’t return.
- Porosity test: Drop a strand in water. Hair that sinks quickly is high porosity — a sign of cuticle damage.
- Wet texture test: Does hair feel gummy when wet? If yes, straightening is not safe right now.
What to Do Before Straightening Damaged Hair
- Bond repair treatments (Olaplex or similar) for 4–6 weeks prior
- Trim the worst damage before treatment
- Intensive conditioning to build structural reserves
